INSPIRATIONAL BASEBALL QUOTE

The boys of summer are at it again with an inspirational baseball quote.  Who better to comment on the game than the players, and maybe a few managers and commentators?

I'm not sure how baseball came to be the United States national pasttime.  It seems an odd choice.  No violence.  Limited number of players.  Umpires that you can't hit, even if you can shout at them.  Sounds pretty un-American.

But there is a real fascination with it.  As our national genius Albert Einstein has said:

You teach me baseball and I'll teach you relativity. No, we must not. You will learn about relativity faster than I learn baseball.

I don't see many back alley games anymore.  It's sad that baseball has become so institutionalized.  I'm not sure that many players spouted an inspirational baseball quote in the backroads of the 1920's, but it was a great game back then nonetheless.

I couldn't resist a couple of inspirational baseball quote selections from one of my favorite movies, "A League of Their Own".  Yes, "A Field of Dreams" is here too.  So let's go see what kind of inspirational baseball quote some of these players came up with.

***

First, an inspirational baseball quote selection from the insiders of the game -- the players, the coaches, the managers, the umps.

If we're going to win the pennant, we've got to start thinking we're not as good as we think we are.
Casey Stengel

Son, what kind of pitch would you like to miss?
Dizzy Dean

You owe it to yourself to be the best you can possible be - in baseball and in life.
Pete Rose

Baseball, it is said, is only a game. True. And the Grand Canyon is only a hole in Arizona. Not all holes, or games, are created equal.
George Will

I never questioned the integrity of an umpire. Their eyesight, yes.
Leo Durocher

I think there are only three things America will be known for 2,000 years from now when they study this civilization: the Constitution, jazz music, and baseball.
Gerald Early

The good Lord was good to me. He gave me a strong body, a good right arm, and a weak mind.
Dizzy Dean

If I had my career to play over, one thing I'd do differently is swing more. Those 1,200 walks I got, nobody remembers them.
PeeWee Reese

I know it's tough. Everybody in baseball knows its tough. I'm just going to give it my best shot.
Mark McGwire

Close don't count in baseball. Close only counts in horseshoes and grenades.
Frank Robinson

Pitchers did me a favor when they knocked me down. It made me more determined. I wouldn't let that pitcher get me out. They say you can't hit if you're on your back, but I didn't hit on my back. I got up.
Frank Robinson

Don't ever forget two things I'm going to tell you. One, don't believe everything that's written about you. Two, don't pick up too many checks.
Babe Ruth

If it wasn't for baseball, I'd be in either the penitentiary or the cemetery.
Babe Ruth

There is no room in baseball for discrimination. It is our national pastime and a game for all.
Lou Gehrig

The pitcher has got only a ball. I've got a bat. So the percentage of weapons is in my favor and I let the fellow with the ball do the fretting.
Hank Aaron

Every great batter works on the theory that the pitcher is more afraid of him than he is of the pitcher.
Ty Cobb

Cub fans, by consensus, are the best in baseball. Year after year, in good times and (mostly) bad, they turn out in vociferous numbers, sustaining themselves with a heavenly choir that combines loyalty, criticism, cheerfulness, durability, rage, beer and hope, in exquisite proportions.
Roger Angell

Every day is a new opportunity. You can build on yesterday's success or put its failures behind and start over again. That's the way life is, with a new game every day, and that's the way baseball is.
Bob Feller

I never want to quit playing ball. They’ll have to cut this uniform off of me to get me out of it
Roy Campanella

Boys, I'm one of those umpires that misses 'em every once in a while so if it's close, you'd better hit it.
Umpire Cal Hubbard

God, I hope I wear this jersey forever."
Derek Jeter

Fans don't boo nobodies.
Reggie Jackson

What is the top requirement for a second baseman? A fine shortstop.
Nellie Fox

The (New York) Yankees can be had.
Al Lopez, Manager

Don't call us (ballplayers) heroes. Fireman are heroes
Sparky Anderson, Manager

If I ever find a pitcher who has heat, a good curve, and a slider, I might seriously consider marrying him, or at least proposing.
Sparky Anderson

Who's on First?  An inspirational baseball quote?  Well, maybe one inspired by baseball, with a touch of lunacy:

Abbott: Now, on the St. Louis team we have Who's on first, What's on second, I Don't Know is on third.
Costello: That's what I want to find out.
"Who's on First" by Abbot and Costello

(Note:  This loony routine went on for about 10 minutes.  It is still hilarious.)

For a couple of brief seasons, women actually captured the baseball limelight.  The movie, "A League of Their Own" with Geena Davis brought us a couple of great inspirational baseball quote notes:

Jimmy Dugan: Shit, Dottie, if you want to go back to Oregon and make a hundred babies, great, I'm in no position to tell anyone how to live. But sneaking out like this, quitting, you'll regret it for the rest of your life. Baseball is what gets inside you. It's what lights you up, you can't deny that.

Dottie Hinson: It just got too hard.

Jimmy Dugan: It's supposed to be hard! If it wasn't hard, everyone would do it. The hard... is what makes it great!

... and in another section, the most famous quote in the movie:

Crying?  There's no crying in baseball.

And, of course, "Field of Dreams".  The inspirational baseball quote here is as legendary as the game:

If you build it, he will come.

This inspirational baseball quote selection is just too good to pass up:

A hot dog at the ball park is better than steak at the Ritz.
Humphrey Bogart

Bye bye baby!
Russ Hodges, announcing home run hits

Oh, somewhere in this favored land the sun is shining bright.
The band is playing somewhere, and somewhere hearts are light.
And, somewhere men are laughing, and little children shout,
but there is no joy in Mudville --
mighty Casey has struck out.
"Casey At The Bat"
by Ernest L. Thayer

Take me out to the ballgame
Take me out with the crowds.
Buy me some peanuts and crackerjacks
I don't care if I never get back.
"Take Me Out to the Ballgame" by Jack Norworth

And Mickey Mantle.  He may, or may not, have been the greatest player of all time, but he was such a great guy that I had to include this set of his inspirational baseball quote notes:

After I hit a home run I had a habit of running the bases with my head down. I figured the pitcher already felt bad enough without me showing him up rounding the bases.

Heroes are people who are all good with no bad in them. That's the way I always saw Joe DiMaggio. He was beyond question one of the greatest players of the century.

A team is where a boy can prove his courage on his own. A gang is where a coward goes to hide."

Somebody once asked me if I ever went up to the plate trying to hit a home run. I said, 'Sure, every time.

Let's close as Announcer Harry Caray began his games, with this delightful inspirational baseball quote:

Hello again, everybody. It's a bee-yooo-tiful day for baseball.
